Wales has a total of 40 seats. There was a 61.6% turnout in 2001, 11.9% less than 1997. The Labour Party polled most votes (48.6%) ahead of the Conservatives (21%) and Plaid Cymru (14.3%). There was a 3.8% swing from Labour to Conservative.
Key marginals are Monmouth, where Labour held off the Tories by 384 votes in 2004, and Cardiff Central, where Labour's once huge majority has been cut to 659 by the Lib Dems.
