Scotland has a total of 59 seats in 2005 as opposed to 72 in 2001. There was a 58.2% turnout in 2001, 13.1% less than 1997. The Labour Party polled most votes (43.9%) ahead of the SNP (20.1%) and the Liberal Democrats (16.4%). There was a 0.1% swing from SNP to Labour.
Key marginals are two new seats Dumfries & Galloway and Dumfrieshire, Clydesdale & Tweedale, the former being an amalgamation of the 2001 Labour seat Dumfries and Tory seat Galloway & Upper Nithsdale. Labour would have taken this seat by 141 votes based on results four years ago. Inverness, a revised constituency, is held by Labour by 1,134 votes, with the Lib Dems and SNP hopeful.
