Naming of a Member
'Naming of a Member' is the term used to describe the disciplining of an MP for breaking the rules of the House of Commons. The term comes from the fact that during a debate in the House of Commons, MPs refer to each other only by the name of their constituencies or by their official position, not their actual names. The only time names are used are when the Speaker calls MPs to speak or disciplines them. If an MP disregards the authority of the Chair or persistently obstructs the House in its duties then he or she can be 'named'. The Speaker says "I name the Honourable Member for ..... Mr/s…….., for disregarding the authority of the Chair." A first offence brings suspension for five days. The second offence in the same parliamentary sitting carries twenty day's suspension and a third offence a period the House itself decides. Should an MP refuse to withdraw and resist removal, then suspension for the rest of the session is the punishment.

National Assembly for Wales
The National Assembly for Wales was set up as part of the process of Devolution initiated by the Labour Government elected in 1997. The Welsh people voted in 1998 to set up the Assembly in a referendum. The new Assembly took over the responsibilities of the Welsh Office and has powers to make secondary, but not primary, legislation.

Next Sitting Friday
The House of Commons does not sit every Friday. The Next Sitting Friday is the next Friday when the House of Commons is scheduled to meet. The House usually only debates Private Members’ Bills during Friday sittings.

Northern Ireland Assembly
The setting up of a Northern Ireland Assembly was agreed by the people of Northern Ireland in a referendum in 1998. It is part of the policy of Devolution developed by the current Government. The Assembly is also part of the peace initiative in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Office
The Northern Ireland Office is the Government Department which has direct responsibility for political and constitutional matters, law and order, and security in Northern Ireland.

Not Contents Lobby
In the House of Lords the Not Contents Lobby is the lobby used by those who vote against a motion in divisions.

Notices of Question
The asking of an Oral question in the House of Commons is the end of a lengthy process. First the MP tables (gives notice) of his or her question giving a minimum period of notice of three days so that the Minister being questioned has time to prepare an answer. Notices of questions are printed as part of the daily 'Vote Bundle '. All questions tabled to a particular department are then subject to a random computer shuffle. Successful questions will be asked on the relevant day and the Member will also be able to ask a supplementary question. The Minister will answer both the original and the supplementary question in the Chamber, in person.
