Megan Stammers to be reunited with family today

Police question British maths teacher Jeremy Forrest in relation to a case involving a 15-year-old girl. He has not been charged with any offence.

The 15-year-old is due back in her hometown of Eastbourne, East Sussex, after being found in Bordeaux with Jeremy Forrest on Thursday.

Mr Forrest, who was arrested in France on suspicion of child abduction, is currently being detained in Bordeaux. His lawyers said he would not fight his extradition to the UK and had agreed to return as soon as possible.

Last night Martin Stammers, Megan’s step father, said: “We just can’t wait to be reunited with her. Our family are overjoyed at the outcome. As you can imagine it’s been an absolute emotional rollercoaster.”

He thanked police, the media and members of the public for their help in the week-long search for Megan, but added that he would like the family to be left alone now “to bond again in private”.

The pair was found after a member of the public in Bordeaux recognised them from a television bulletin seen on Wednesday.

Terry Boatwright, headteacher of Bishop Bell C of E School, where Megan went missing from last Friday, said: “Throughout the last week, finding Megan has been everyone’s priority and a major focus of our thoughts and prayers in school.

“Clearly, much needs to be done now to support Megan and her family as they seek to return to some sort of normality and we will do all we can to play our part in that.”

There have been claims that concerns were raised about Megan’s relationship with her teacher in February, when her friend told another teacher that the pair had been seen holding hands.

East Sussex Council said it was investigating.
