Monday 4 July: It emerges Milly Dowler’s parents were told by police that their daughter’s phone may have been hacked by the News of the World in days after she went missing. The Dowlers’ lawyer Mark Lewis said: “The fact that they were prepared to act in such a heinous way that could have jeopardised the police investigation and give them false hope is despicable.”

Tuesday 5 July: As it transpires police also contacted the parents of murdered schoolgirls Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells about phone hacking, Channel 4 News Home Affairs Correspondent Andy Davies learns that the News of the World also targeted a Met police detective.
