Gay marriage: first gay couple wed in France

France’s first gay couple to marry say “oui” in a politically charged ceremony in the southern city of Montpellier.

Bruno Boileau and Vincent Autin became the first gay couple in France to wed, under new legislation which made France the 14th country in the world to allow same-sex marriage.

The ceremony took place in the southern French city of Montpellier in front of mayor Helene Mandroux in a hall packed with friends, family, and the world’s media.

The wedding took place following weeks of large-scale protests across the country by people opposing the reform – an election pledge of French President Francois Hollande.
