Fog grounds flights across the UK

Flights are grounded as visibility has been reduced to a 100 yards in many areas of the UK.

A yellow weather warning for fog has been issued for much of England and east Wales with airports cancelling many flights until the weather clears.

Around 45 flights – equivalent to 10 per cent of departures – have been cancelled from Heathrow Airport , while London City Airport reported that a “considerable number” of flights have been cancelled.

Gatwick also expected to have cancellations due to poor visibility caused by the fog.

Flights continued to be disrupted at both Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with several services cancelled to and from Amsterdam, the Isle of Man, Southampton and Edinburgh.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport tweeted a picture of a foggy air traffic control building with the message: “Like the rest of the UK we are experiencing some delays & cancellations. Fog may affect your travel this morning so check for updates directly with your airline before your travel.”

The Met Office weather warning is valid until midday, with fog expected to slowly clear throughout the morning. Visibility could be reduced to less than 100 yards, the forecaster added.

Passengers are being advised to check the status of their flight with the airline before travelling to the airport.

After long delays on Sunday some travellers landed at Heathrow in the early hours of the morning.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: “We’ve got extra passenger ambassadors in the terminals to provide assistance for those travelling today.

“Once again we would like to apologise for the disruption.”

Motorists have been advised to take care on the roads with Highways England urging people to allow extra time for their journeys.
