Five charged with terrorism offences

Five people are charged with terrorism offences following investigations by the Metropolitan Police’s counter terrorism command.

Three men from London were charged with offences that involved travelling to Pakistan for training in terrorism between July 2010 and July 2012. A woman was also charged with possessing terrorist material.

All four were arrested between 5 and 7 July.

A fifth man was arrested on Wednesday in east London and charged with three counts of possession of terrorist material.

None of the alleged offences was linked to the 2012 Olympics, Scotland Yard said.

All five will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court today.

Richard Dart, 29, of Broadway, Ealing, Imran Mahmood, 21, of Dabbs Hill Lane, Northolt and Jahangir Alom, 26, of Abbey Road, Stratford, are all charged with preparing for acts of terrorism between July 25, 2010 and July 6, 2012.

The three are alleged to have travelled to Pakistan for terrorism training, to have travelled abroad to commit acts of terrorism, and to have advised and counselled the commission of terrorist acts by providing information about travel to Pakistan and terrorism training, and operational security whilst there.

The woman, Ruksana Begum, 22, of Provost Estate, Islington, is charged with possession of a digital memory card containing a document likely to be of use to a terrorist, from 5 July.

The fifth man, Khalid Baqa, 47, of Priory Road, Barking, is charged with three counts of possession of terrorist material and one count of dissemination of terrorist material, all dating from 5 July.

According to the charges, Baqa is said to have had CDs containing a document entitled 39 Ways to Support and Participate in Jihad, as well as a number of issues of a magazine called Inspire, which it is said he planned to distribute.
