Ferguson: two officers shot in unrest after chief resigns

The two police officers who were reportedly shot outside the Ferguson, Missouri, police station early Thursday are conscious and being treated at a local hospital, St. Louis County Police says.

The town was hit by riots over the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown last year.

The police chief resigned on Wednesday following a federal report that said his force was racially biased and recommended a number of changes.

Protestors celebrating the resignation gathered outside the headquarters before officers pushed them back, arresting one woman in the process. A fight then broke out among the crowd.

Missouri police later released pictures showing the bloody aftermath, including a police helmet dripping with blood, and a red-stained patch of grass where the shooting took place.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told reporters that an officer from the department was shot in the shoulder and an officer from the Webster Groves Police Department was struck in the face when at least three shots rang out as the crowd protesting at the station was breaking up.

A few dozen demonstrators fled following the sound with some screaming, “They hit a cop,” around midnight, the photographer said.

Both officers suffered “very serious gunshot injuries” but were conscious, police said.

On 9 August 2014 18-year-old Brown was shot multiple times by Darren Wilson, who told investigators he and Brown had an angry and violent encounter, and that he was in fear of his life.

In November a grand jury decided not to indict Wilson over the shooting.
