England win the Ashes - with a match still to go

England clinched the Ashes with a rush of wickets from Stuart Broad in a dramatic finale at Chester-le-Street on Monday evening.

Broad finished with 11 wickets (6-20 in 45 balls) in the match as Australia, set 299 to win, crumbled from 147 for one to 224 all out. The tourists lost the last five wickets for just 13 runs as England pounced on a 74-run victory with one day to spare, putting the home side 3-0 up in the five-match series.

No glory for Warner

Earlier Australia’s David Warner, the pantomime villain of this summer after his errant punch at Joe Root in a Birmingham bar during the Champions Trophy, had threatened to claw back a win for Australia but his opening stand of 109 with Chris Rogers was wiped out by the middle order collapse.

England sealed victory, and the series, as light was fading just after 7.40pm.

Captain Alastair Cook paid tribute to Broad’s late flurry of wickets: “I can’t praise him enough – words don’t do it justice. The character to turn it round after tea was impressive. Huge credit to Broady.”

He also praised batsman Ian Bell’s third century of the series: “He came in and played an outstanding innings – he’s in great form. He got those centuries in really gritty circumstances.”

Broad, man of the match, said: “It was amazing – the crowd kept us going there. Australia batted really hard and took their chances. We had to change our plans.

“To help your side win a Test match is always special – our bowling unit had confidence and we knew if we got our balls in the right area the wicket would help us out.”

The fifth and final Test begins at the Oval in London on 21 August.
