Labour looked like it had landed on a vote-winning policy when an official Tweet suggested it would provide everyone in the UK with an owl.
The party’s press team posted a message on its Twitter account simply stating: “Everybody should have his own owl.”
The press team later said their account had been hacked and the tweet was a hoax.
A party source said it had taken steps to fix the matter, blaming a “bot” for the tweet, which has since been deleted. But before the admission, another message was posted informing users that the “head turning policy” was “no longer going to take flight”.
Here is some more of the reaction from the day:
Owl having a bath and being dried. https://t.co/wFwsvAtoMX If Labour really did offer everyone one of these, they’d romp home

Dear @Ed_Miliband I would like this tiny, friendly owl. Thanks in advance. Susan. pic.twitter.com/00r5ORvyCI

Ed Milliband could win people over by making a joke out of this owl thing, but no doubt he’ll meekly apologise. He’s too wet to woo voters

I mean it would stimulate the economy, provide a sense of national unity, give everybody an owl. Popular, progressive. Vote winner.

For those asking, the owl tweet was a result of our twitter account being hacked. Hopefully we’re out of the woods now.
