‘Mentally unstable’ man shoots eight dead in Czech Republic

Eight people are reported dead in a shooting at a restaurant in the Czech Republic – thought to have been carried out by a “mentally unstable” man who then turned the gun on himself.

The shooting, in the town of Uhersky Brod, was reported to have been carried out by a lone gunman – a 60-year-old man.

Patrik Kuncar, mayor of Uhersky Brod, told Czech television: “I have been conveyed information that it was a 60-year-old local man, probably mentally unstable.”

The man was reported to have entered the restaurant and fired 25 shots “randomly”. Eight people were killed and another woman seriously injured.

The gunman, who has not yet been named, is then reported to have turned the gun on himself.

“I assume this was an isolated incident. I cannot see security measures that would prevent incidents like this,” Mr Kuncar said.

“We have various anti-terrorist measures but we can see that, here, probably a lone shooter struck with no warning.”

The shooting was reported to take place in the Druzhba restaurant. A police spokesman confirmed there was shooting in the town of Uhersky Brod, 180 miles southeast of Prague, but declined to comment on any victims.
