Watch the moment a teen stowaway jumps out of a plane

CCTV footage from Hawaii shows a 15-year-old boy leaving a passenger plane after apparently hiding in a jet wheel to survive a five hour flight from California.

Hawaii transport officials released video of a Californian teenager hopping from a jet’s wheel well after stowing away for a flight that lasted over five hours.

The video shows the teenager hop out of the wheel, pause for over 10 seconds on the tarmac, before slowly walking away from the plane, making a wobbly path towards the terminal at Kahului Airport. He would have been fighting low oxygen and freezing temperatures, but survived the five and a half hour flight relatively unscathed.

The video appears to confirm the account of Yahya Abdi’s seemingly unbelievable story given by the FBI and airport officials. The teenager, a Somali immigrant, had apparently run away from home, hopped a fence at Mineta San Jose International Airport in California and climbed into the wheel well of the closest plane.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation released the footage of the 20 April incident, in which the 15-year-old lowers himself from the Boeing 767 and jumps to the ground.

Hawaii Department of Transportation spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter said the footage was released after the state attorney general’s office reviewed media requests.

San Jose police spokesman Albert Morales said he flew back to California over the weekend and was being cared for by Santa Clara County Child Protective Services.

Mr Morales said in a statement on Tuesday that authorities plan to work with the boy’s lawyer to interview him in the near future. They will then decide whether or not to file charges against him.
