Man arrested after mother and baby found dead

A man is arrested after a mother and her baby were found dead at their Birmingham home on Sunday morning, West Midlands police say.

The bodies of the 25-year-old woman and her baby were discovered at a house on Chells Grove in Billesley, south Birmingham, after neighbours called police, concerned about the safety of those inside.

Murder detectives then arrested a 28-year-old man, who was known to the victims, in Dudley at around 5:15pm.

Officers have said there had previously been contact between police and the suspect. The police watchdog, the IPCC, has been informed.

West Midlands police Superintendent Andy Shipman said: “Today’s awful murders will of course send shock waves through the community. My thoughts are with the family of those involved.

“Local officers will be highly visible in the area throughout tonight and into the coming week, speaking to residents and reassuring local people. If you have any information that you think may be of value to this inquiry, please approach these officers and share that with them.

“I want to reassure the community that a man has been arrested and we believe there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said a serious case review and a domestic homicide review are likely to be carried out, while officers said they voluntarily informed the IPCC “due to previous contact between police and the person in custody”.
