In a video posted to YouTube, the Sherlock star told a crowd outside the theatre that it was “mortifying” to see all the “cameras and red lights” in the audience during his performance.

“I can see red lights and cameras in the auditorium and it might not be any of you here but it is blindingly obvious…it’s mortifying and there’s nothing less enjoyable or supportive as an actor on stage experiencing that,” he told fans.

“I can’t give you what I want to give you which is a live performance that you’ll remember, hopefully, in your minds and brains whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, rather than on your phones,” he added.

The 39-year-old is playing Hamlet in a 12-week run of the play which opened on 5 August.
