Bafta 2013: Ben Affleck ‘does the double’

Ben Affleck scoops the top two awards at Sunday night’s Bafta 2013 awards, winning best director and best film for his movie Argo.

Affleck was honoured for the Iran hostage crisis film at the awards, which were held at the Royal Opera House in London. Affleck, who rose to fame as an actor, said: “I want to say this is a second act for me and you’ve given me that, this industry has given me that and I want to thank you and I’m so grateful and proud.”

In October, Affleck spoke to Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman about how he found parallels between incidents that took place in Iran in 1979 and 1980, and the Arab Spring taking place whilst Argo was being filmed (see below).

Other big winners on the night included Daniel Day-Lewis (pictured, below), for his role as former US president Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”, and Emmanuelle Riva for her role in Amour. Skyfall, the latest in the James Bond franchise, won “outstanding British film”.
