Xmas greetings from space station

Updated on 13 December 2008

The crew of the International Space Station have beamed a seasonal message of goodwill from orbit.

Expedition Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineer Sandy Magnus recorded a video message wishing the world "a happy and healthy year ahead."

The pair, along with Cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov, will be the only inhabitants on board the station at Christmas, following the recent departure of the US Space Shuttle Endeavour.

They will have a few more comforts this year after the shuttle mission renovated the inside of the station and installed a recycling system for turning urine into drinking water.

NASA is encouraging the public to send their own greetings to the space station crew.

The space agency has set up a link on its website to relay special holiday postcards into space.
