US 'ready to lead' on environment
Updated on 26 January 2009
President Barack Obama has declared that the US is "ready to lead" the fight against climate change, reversing Bush administration policy in the process.
The president ordered a review into a 2007 decision to reject a request from California to set its own exhaust emission standard, a move that would force carmakers to cut the greenhouse gas emission of new vehicles.
In so doing it potentially opened the way for other states to impose stricter pollution laws. Campaign groups said it marked a new era in US environmental policy.
