Two guards killed by Kabul suicide attack
Updated on 14 January 2008
At least two guards have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on a luxury hotel in Kabul in Afghanistan.
The five-star Serena Hotel is frequented mainly by affluent foreigners and is situated in the city centre.
Two attackers threw hand grenades at the guards to get past the outer security area and into hotel where they detonated their vests.
A security source said guards had opened fire on the attackers while they were outside the hotel.
More than 140 suicide attacks were carried out in 2007 by hardline Islamist Taliban militants.
The attacks were part of a campaign to overthrow the pro-Western Afghan government and eject foreign forces from the country.
