Twelve killed in Pakistan bombing
Updated on 08 November 2009
A suicide bomber blew himself up in a market in Pakistan's north west crowded with shoppers ahead of a Muslim holiday, killing 12 people, including a mayor who once supported but had turned against the Taliban, officials said.
A purported commander for the militant group claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying the official was targeted for "interfering in our matters".
The bombing, in the town of Adazai, about 10 miles south of the main north western city of Peshawar, underscores the difficulty of combating militancy in Pakistan, where the Taliban have carried out a series of attacks in recent weeks.
