South Africa permits elephant cull

A 13-year ban on killing elephants has been lifted by South Africa as conservationists warned it could encourage ivory poachers and threaten populations elsewhere on the continent.
Elephants, once on the verge of extinction in some parts of South Africa, are flourishing, with the population growing at a rate of more than five per cent annually in recent years as a result of a well-managed national parks industry.
South African authorities want to control their burgeoning numbers and protect the elephants' viability.
