Sonia Gandhi, the head of India's ruling Congress party, is being treated in a New Delhi hospital for a chest infection, a hospital official said.

Ms Gandhi, 61, was in stable condition after checking in with mild breathing problems late on Monday night, said Dr B K Rao, an official at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the Indian capital.

Ms Gandhi had begun receiving treatment and was doing well, Rao said in a statement issued by the hospital. It did not say when she would be released.
