South African soldiers have been sent into the streets for the first time since a wave of attacks on foreigners began nearly two weeks ago.

President Thabo Mbeki gave the order late on Wednesday to call in the South African National Defence Force.

The attacks have tarnished the country's reputation as a bastion of economic and political stability in Africa.
