Snowmail: Tax breaks predicted
Updated on 16 November 2008
Gordon Brown has brought back a little present for us from the G20 meeting in Washington.
We are not allowed to peel back the paper yet but we are expecting some kind of tax cut and 'sources' (perhaps they have been allowed to shake the box a little) say it may happen through the tax credit and winter fuel payment systems.
We'll find out exactly what it is in the chancellor's pre-budget report a week tomorrow. The Conservatives have been reminding everyone that, of course, we will end up paying for the present ourselves.
The G20 did mention the idea of fiscal stimulus (which includes tax breaks) in its final communique, but only briefly. Faisal Islam will be reporting from Washington on what else they have agreed.

POLICE CHASE CRASH INVESTIGATED
The independent police complaints commission is investigating the circumstances of a car crash in which three young people were killed in Oldham. Their car was being pursued, apparently at some distance, by a police car when it lost control. A fourth girl who was in the car is seriously ill in hospital.
