It was a conduit for teenage girls' emotions, a fortnightly homage to everything that was good and ugly in the world of pop.

But now, 28 years after its first publication, 'Smash Hits' magazine will go on sale for the last time later this month.

In its heyday 'Smash Hits' sold nearly a million copies. It also revolutionised marketing for teenage girls, serving up pages of gossip, interviews, pull-out posters and most importantly - lyrics to the top tunes.

But today the magazine's publisher Emap said its "time has passed": today's fans are migrating to other platforms to absorb music information.
