Shinawatra takes up Cambodian role
Updated on 10 November 2009
Thailand's fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has arrived in Cambodia following his appointment as economic adviser to the government, fuelling tensions between the neighbouring countries.
The toppled leader is due to deliver a lecture on Thursday to more than 300 economists while in Phnom Penh.
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Mr Thaksin flew into the Cambodian capital's military airport aboard a private plane. A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity since he was not authorised to talk to the press, said Mr Thaksin arrived with a party of less than 10 people and was driven into Phnom Penh under very tight security.
