Sarkozy stands firm against strikes
Updated on 23 March 2010
French president Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed to continue with reforms meant to modernise the economy, despite nationwide protest strikes and a electoral hammering.
Trains, schools and other public services were hit by the strike, culminating in around 180 protest marches around France.
Unions hoped their joint action would halt retirement reforms and public sector job cuts promised by Mr Sarkozy, who has made making France's economy more globally competitive his priority.
