Russian forces remain in Georgia

Updated on 23 August 2008

By Sue Turton

Russia is refusing to withdraw its troops from a key Georgian port despite ongoing protests by the Georgian people, Sue Turton reports.

Around 1,000 Georgians marched from the port of Poti to the Russian camp, to deliver a message across the trenches today: Russians go home.

Their continued presence in Georgia, including in Poti, was not part of the French-brokered ceasefire deal.

The Russians say the troops are an additional security measure to counter a possible backlash.

But as many Georgians return to wrecked homes and businesses, they're nervous that Russia has no intention of keeping to its side of the bargain.
