Quake rocks southwest China
Updated on 09 July 2009
A strong earthquake has rocked southwest China, leaving hundreds of people injured.
The government of Yao'an county, in Yunnan province, estimated that of the 300 wounded, more than 30 had severe injuries.
Reports said at least 10,000 homes had collapsed.
The 6.0 magnitude quake struck at 7:19 pm in the town of Guantun, in a mountainous area about 125 miles northwest of the provincial capital Kunming.
The US Geological Service estimated the severity of the quake at 5.7 at a depth of about 6 miles.
The area has regularly suffered earthquakes and aftershocks since an 8.0 quake in neighbouring Sichuan in May 2008 killed about 80,000 people.
