In tonight's programme...

We are used to assorted public service unions giving ministers a rough time and home secretaries often getting a rougher time than most but the junking of normal courtesies with her highly personal assault on the present home secretary, Jacqui Smith from the Police Federation chairman Jan Berry may hold the record for some time to come.

You may recall that police anger was stoked by the home secretary's decision not to backdate a pay award (which was backdated in Scotland).

Ms Smith - accused of 'betraying' police - managed to look both hurt and angry at the same time. Cathy Newman will be reporting on this at 7.

Of course the broader issue that flows from this is that of how public service wages are being kept checked in check while the government manages public spending in tightening times.

The civil service union is flexing its muscles determined to carry out more strikes. Their leader Mark Serwotka will be live tonight. We're hoping for a government response.

Moscow Champions League final =============================

We are live in Moscow tonight for that match - Chelsea v Man Utd. Nick Paton Walsh may hope to repeat his dazzling performance at lunchtime today, when he found himself translating the words of the policeman in Red Square live. Now that's what I call a good test of Russian. It's raining there and so far it's reasonably good natured. One presumes Muscovites are backing the oligarch's team.

We'll have plenty more from Burma, China, Lebanon and South Africa, and the latest twist on the Obama-Clinton saga.

Cannes: Polanski documentary ============================

And finally Nick Glass has a report from Cannes where he interviews the maker of a documentary about the film director Roman Polanski who at 74 is still banned from the US, the UK and many other countries - as a result of having fled America some 30 years ago where he was facing rape charges concerning a 13-year-old girl.

Loads more moving see you at 7, Jon.

And on More4 News tonight =========================

So if it's going to be McCain v Obama, what can we expect? After a crunching night for Hillary Clinton, is the main race about to begin in earnest? We'll have the latest analysis and be speaking to Michelle Henery here in London, reading the runes of the race to come...

Also - remember when terrorists were separatists? Spanish police are claiming a major breakthrough with three arrests in France of figures who they say are major players in ETA - the Basque separatist movement. Is it too soon to declare the ETA's reign over? We'll have the latest from Spain.

And finally, Californian police dig up the former home of mass murderer Charles Manson. The 73-year-old is serving a life sentence - but are there more bodies buried in Death Valley?

See you at eight, Kylie
