Poachers kill hundreds of vicunas
Updated on 06 July 2009
Peruvian officials said poachers have killed 480 wild vicunas and made off with their valuable fleece in a poor Andean region of the country's south-east.
Jorge Quinto, natural resources manager for the Huancavelica region, estimated that the fleece is worth 50,000 US dollars.
Vicuna wool is highly prized for its smoothness, warmth and light weight.
