Britain's top Medical Officer says many cosmetic surgery patients are suffering botched operations at the hands of cowboy plastic surgeons.
Now, Sir Liam Donaldson has launched a a new website aimed at driving up surgical standards.
The site offers detailed information about the key questions to ask surgeons - and how to check whether medical staff are properly qualified.
According to The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons - more than 16,000 cosmetic procedures took place last year, up 18 per cent on the previous year.
While the majority of cosmetic surgery continues to be carried out on women - more than 1,300 men are now going under the knife too.
For women the most popular procedure is breast augmentation - rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, for men.
