Pakistan valley under Islamic law

Updated on 13 April 2009

Source PA News

Pakistan's president Asif Ali Zardari, under pressure from MPs including members of his own party, has signed a regulation that puts a north-west valley under Islamic law to achieve peace with Taliban militants who have brutalised the area.

Meanwhile, authorities announced the arrest of a fifth person in connection with the deadly siege of the Indian city of Mumbai last year.

The provincial government in north-western Pakistan agreed in February to impose Islamic law in the Swat Valley and surrounding areas in exchange for a ceasefire with the local Taliban.
