Updated on 16 July 2009

One person has died and nine are injured - including one Briton - after the roof of a stage being built for a Madonna concert collapsed in France

The roof structure at the Stade Velodrome stadium in Marseille fell apart on top of several construction workers.

Two of the injured - an American and a Briton - are said to be seriously hurt. The worker who was killed was French.

Four other people sustained multiple injuries, including fractured bones, and three others suffered light injuries. All were taken to local hospitals.

The gig - part of Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour - was immediately cancelled and the pop star has issued a statement expressing her "devastation".

City officials say the roof was about two-thirds complete when it collapsed in stages on top of the workers. The cause of the collapse is not yet clear.
