Barack Obama accused US President George W Bush of "a false political attack" after Bush warned in Israel against appeasing terrorists - early salvos in a general election presidential campaign that is already blazing even as Obama tries to sew up the Democratic nomination.

The White House denied Obama was Bush's target, but the White House contender said the Republican president's intent was clear. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, jumped in, too, using the opportunity to argue that Obama was showing "naivete and inexperience and lack of judgment" in his willingness to meet with US foes.

Obama has said as president he would be willing to personally meet with Iran's leaders and those of other regimes the US has deemed rogue.
