Obama considers Afghan troop surge
Updated on 14 October 2009
US President Barack Obama has convened his war council to discuss the way forward in Afghanistan.
The closed door meeting of the president's national security team followed the UK's announcement that it was sending more troops to the southern province of Helmand.
Mr Obama is coming under increasing pressure to respond to a report by General Stanley McChrystal, the US and Nato commander in Afghanistan, which calls for a troop surge to try to turn around fortunes in the flagging war.
