`Marriage is critical to the health of society' - President Bush speaking a few minutes ago: attempting to rally his republican power base by banning gay marriage ahead of this year's mid-term elections.

Driven largely by America's religious right, Mr Bush is backing the controversial Marriage Protection Amendment.

But there's very little chance the proposal will succeed - so why is the President resurrecting such a divisive policy?
