Miliband hails Sri Lanka ceasefire

The 48-hour ceasefire in Sri Lanka "could be an important first step towards the end of conflict without further civilian casualties", the Foreign Office has said.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband spoke to his opposite number in Sri Lanka, Rohitha Bogollogama, as protests against the Sri Lankan government's offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels and alleged human rights abuses continued in London's Parliament Square.
Prarameswaran Subramaniam, who has lost several family members in the troubles, remains on hunger strike despite politicians agreeing to facilitate meetings with representatives from Europe, the Commonwealth, the UN and the US.
