Once he was vilified as a criminal, a terrorist - even a "mad dog".
And there was a time when Libya’s Colonel Gaddafy was even public enemy number one.
Now other public enemies have replaced him - and the famously eccentric ruler has become a new best friend for a succession of European leaders.
