Saddam Hussein was buried last night in his home village in northern Iraq.

Before burial, his body was washed and covered in a white shroud in observance of Muslim rite.

A source close to leading local Sunni Muslim clerics said that a funeral service was held at a mosque in Tikrit, Saddam's former power base.

The body was then taken to the village of Awja and laid to rest in a religious hall in the presence of a small group of local officials and tribal leaders.

A source close to Saddam's family has confirmed that his remains have been interred at a family plot in a cemetery in Awja, where his sons Uday and Qusay, killed by US troops in 2003, also lie.
