Quit Iraq soon, says army chief

In an unprecedented series of comments, the head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, has criticised British strategy in Iraq.

Interviewed in today's Daily Mail, he says that Britain's presence in Iraq "exacerbates the difficulties we are facing around the world". And he calls for the army to quit Iraq "sometime soon".

His comments will not have pleased his political masters. So what motivated the general to speak out now? And how will his words go down in Whitehall and on the ground in Iraq?
