More than 60 of the victims were killed in a double car bombing at a Baghdad university. Most of those who died were female students making their way home.

The attacks come on the day the UN put the total killed in Iraq in 2006 at over 34,000.

The death toll of coalition troops continues to rise too. The Pentagon has confirmed that four American soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb attack yesterday near the city of Mosul.
