Hope for UK hostages in Iraq

Updated on 09 June 2009

By Samira Ahmed

The release of an Iraqi insurgent held by the US offers hope for five British hostages seized in Iraq in 2007.

One of the British hostages

Laith al-Khazali, who is part of a Shi'ite group believed to be holding five British citizens, was being held in connection with an attack on American soldiers in Karbala.

His release by the American military is a significant step towards a breakthrough in negotiations.
