The Ministry of Defence said a multi-forces patrol boat was hit on a routine patrol in the Shatt-al-Arab waterway, just before one pm local time.

The three casualties are being treated in hospital but some of their injuries are potentially life-threatening.

Now, 125 British servicemen have lost their lives in Iraq since hostilities began.
