Man insures nose for millions

A leading European winemaker and taster has insured his nose for 5 million euros (£3.9 million).

Lloyd's of London insurance market said the bespoke policy covers the loss of nose and sense of smell.

It has been taken out by Ilja Gort, the Dutch owner of Chateau de la Garde in Bordeaux, France, and the producer of Tulipe Wines.

Mr Gort said his nose was his most important asset, as a good sense of smell was essential to guarantee the constant quality of his wines.

While the tongue has only five areas of taste, the nose can distinguish millions of different scents, he added.

Jonathan Thomas, at Watkins Syndicate who co-insured the policy with Allianz Nederland, said: "This certainly is an insurance policy not to be sniffed at. The nose and sense of smell of a winemaker are as important as the fingers of a chef."
