Madrid bombings: 21 found guilty

Quick Snowmail tonight - we're back to the bombing to the Madrid train system back in 2004 an event which I covered at the time on the ground.
It was the first time Islamic terrorism had come to mainland Europe in any wholesale sense. A staggering 191 people were killed and many thousands more were injured.
Today 21 of the 28 people accused of involvement in the attacks have been convicted. And the story told by the Spanish government at the time, led by Mr Jose Aznar, has finally been laid to rest. He was in the middle of a general election at the time and decided to blame the entire attack on the Basque separatists Eta. It was that more than any other single issue that may have cost him the election.

Supermarkets are good...

The Competition Commission has done an investigation into supermarkets and tells us that all is well. But is it? The report reads as it it might have been written by the supermarkets themselves. We definitely get cheaper food and whilst supermarkets do get up to naughty practices like buying up land to prevent others from competing against them, overall they don't have a very negative impact on local business. Faisal Islam is looking at the report and we shall be close questioning the commission at 7.

You know one could tempted to think the whole of today's news is done by food because if the people who sell it aren't destroying your local town, the stuff that they're selling you might be destroying your tum or worse. An alarming report out today suggests wine, processed meat and red meat give you cancer. As with obesity we all go dashing to the back of our heads to try and work out how much wine and red or processed meat we actually consume. We'll be looking at the report at seven and I hope to survive long enough to bring it to you.

Finally as I write Nicholas Glass is putting his pedal to the floor of assorted classic cars that are going under the hammer. Most of them are from a collection owned by the diminutive operative Bernie Ecclestone. Doubtless Mr Glass will find some interesting colour if not some devastating emissions at seven on four.
