Jailed Black 'shouldn't get bail'
Updated on 07 July 2009
Disgraced former press baron Conrad Black should not be freed on bail while he appeals to the US Supreme Court against his conviction for defrauding shareholders in his media empire, prosecutors have said.
They said that even if the court threw out Black's conviction for swindling the shareholders, he would still have to remain in prison for illegally removing documents sought by the Securities and Exchange Commission and others from his office in Toronto, Canada.
"With full knowledge of an SEC investigation, grand jury investigation and criminal investigation closing in on him, Black knowingly removed 13 boxes of pertinent documents from his Toronto office," they said.
