Four policemen are among six people killed and 18 wounded after two bomb blasts outside a bank in the Iraqi city of Fallujah.

One explosion targeted a police unit guarding the premises in western Anbar province, as people queued up to collect their pensions.

As more police arrived to help evacuate the injured, a second bomb was detonated.

At one point al-Qaeda controlled large swathes of Anbar province before Sunni Arab tribal leaders joined US forces in late 2006 to mostly drive insurgents out.

However, the US military has said the militant organisation would attempt a comeback there.

Last month, a suicide bomber killed 20 people in the region and an al-Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for the attack.

No new date has been set for the US military to transfer security control of Anbar to Iraqi forces after bad weather delayed a handover ceremony late last month.
