Hundreds in disability laws protest

Updated on 04 October 2007

Source PA News

Disabled people from all over Europe have converged on Brussels for a mass rally demanding EU-wide laws banning all forms of disability discrimination.

More than 1,000 demonstrators joined an outdoor ceremony near EU Commission headquarters, where a petition of one million signatures was handed in condemning EU failure to honour a promise to tighten up anti-discrimination rules.

British Labour Euro MP Richard Howitt, President of the European Parliament's All-Party Disability Rights Group of MEPs, said the event was an "acid test" of the EU's willingness to advance social rights.
