The man leading the hunt to fill two new top roles in Europe has spoken of the diplomatic niceties which make the job a serious headache.

The aim is to name the first President of Europe and its first Foreign Minister at a special summit in Brussels next week.

Between now and then, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt is taking soundings in all national capitals and hoping to massage egos and clear the way for consensus.
